#21: The Other Thing, Poems and Drawings by Devendra Banhart

I met Devendra about 3 years ago at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in SF when Marina was working at the front desk. Devendra was working there hanging art and had given Marina a demo tape of his magically weird songs and a little book called The Quick Poems of Devendra Banhart. I can’t remember the chronology, but there was a reading at the Art Institue also. Marina, Adam DeGraff, Alex Corey, the late Anne Simon myself and some other people read with some younger poets who were at school there. Devendra was obviously possessed of some kind of otherworldly charisma. Anyhow, we sort of ran into each other here and there and swapped books.

He has an amazing album out now on Young God Records called Oh Me Oh My The Way The Day Goes By The Sun Is Setting Dogs Are Dreaming Lovesongs Of The Christmas Sprit. He has another book called In the Pool of Athletic Swimming and another recent book without any discernable title from which many of the drawings were pulled..
