These poems are adaptations of emails Cedar sent me over the course of several years. I hoarded them, lined them out and sent them to him to edit. He was mortified by the transparency of the manuscript, but, thankfully, vain enough to let me publish them.
When did we meet Cedar? It was at the BART Station at 16th and Mission in ’99 I think. You were still at Naropa, went away for a few months and came back. The next thing I remember, you were on the back of my baby blue Honda motorcycle as we rode through the Broadway Tunnel back down onto Polk Street.
Cedar runs Old Gold Press, publishes Old Gold Magazine and is the author of Goodnight Nurse (Angry Dog Press) and, just last month, Selected Poems (Ugly Duckling Presse).
The images in this book are taken from the many plastic shopping bags with Thank You roses on them, most of which I collected over the course of several years at corner stores throughout SF and China Town. My goal was to find a dozen Thank You Roses. I found the 12th at a Vietnamese restaurant in Denver called Saigon on my 30th birthday last year after over a year of stagnation at 11. The cover – the 13th – was drawn by Will Yackulic.
